Arguing with God
You might think
that we should never argue with God!
But let’s look at some people who did.
(Some of these passages are a bit long – a quick reminder of what they are about may be all you need).
Genesis 18.22-33. This is the first recorded instance of “intercessory
prayer” – prayer asking God to help other people. It seems to have been successful!
Perhaps we’re too inclined to say gloomily, “Well, God’s will be done”. We
shouldn’t be fatalistic. Perhaps God is waiting for us to intercede!
Exodus 3.11 & 13, and 4.1, 10 & 13. Moses wriggles for all he’s
worth, but there’s no escape. However, at 4.14 God makes a concession.
Maybe it was just as well for Moses that he had this conversation right at the outset.
Job 30.20-26.
One of many places where Job complains that God is being unfair. When God finally replies, Job is
left feeling very small.
Yet at the end of the book we read this – Job 42.7-8. Psalm 13.
One of several psalms where the writer complains to God and seems to want to shame God into supporting him.
(Remember, this could be used in public worship – would we dare to address God like this?)
Jeremiah
continually complains to God – see, for example, 15.10-12, 17.14-18 and, most moving of all, 20.14-18.
But whatever happens, he still obeys. Sincerity is more important when we speak to God
than saying the “right” things!
